Genderbitch Lite: Now With More Rambling!: Justin Bieber Weighs in on Abortion →

ktupsidedown:jinksthehijinksed:lucypaw:sarahmac1987:callurgirlfriend:

“I really don’t believe in abortion,” Bieber says. “It’s like killing a baby?”

How about in cases of rape?

“Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason.

Yeah.. you know, I always kinda hated…

I now have a legit reason to hate Bieber. I’m so pleased.

Fuck you, Bieber.

… DEATH

As loathe as I am to have Justin Bieber’s face as the top entry on my tumblr, I actually have something to say about this!

I apply the usual caveats about there being no excuse for rape, rape apologism, or victim blaming. BUT - and this is a big but, and is a but I will only use in cases like these - there is one thing we need to remember about this quote. More specifically, the source of this quote.

Justin Bieber is what, 16? He is a white, privileged, cis-gendered male. He was raised, and continues to be, very religious. As far as I know, he is not attending any regular school, and most likely has tutors. This limits his circle of discourse to what, a handful of people? How much regular social interaction and learning experiences do you think he gets outside of what is strictly controlled by his parents/management team?

Basically what I am saying is this: remember when you were 16. Remember all the things you thought were absolutely true, the opinions you so fiercely held and so truly believed. I’m willing to bet that looking back on them, you were wrong about a lot of things, things you would never say or do or believe today. This is because when you were 16, your life experience was limited. Your context for the things you said and believed was limited. But you, through direct or indirect guidance (or sometimes all on your own), broadened your worldview. You learned things. You had experiences and gained information that changed the way you thought. That’s part of growing up.

So let’s take that into consideration here. Justin Bieber is 16. He has a limited world view. He doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about. So instead of reacting with blind rage and condemning him to the pits of feminist hell (an understandable impulse), I challenge you - bloggers, media outlets, individuals - to do this: make this a teaching moment. You have the opportunity to teach your children, your friends, anyone at all - and maybe even Justin Bieber - through your words and actions in response to this that there is a big wide world out there, full of different information and opinions, and it is their responsibility to be informed and aware before they let themselves view the world in black and white.
